The Rift Coffee Table is a study in structural tension and geometric precision. Built around the concept of intersecting architectural planes, the design utilizes heavy, structural elements to create a low-profile centerpiece that anchors expansive living spaces and hearth rooms.
The tabletop is constructed from 2-1/2" thick, select rift-sawn white oak boards, chosen for their exceptionally straight, tight grain patterning and long-term stability. Rather than relying on standard under-table fastening, the joinery serves as a prominent visual anchor: heavy plates of oxidized, weathered steel are precisely mortised into the oak. These steel elements cut directly through the timber to form the asymmetrical legs, sitting intentionally proud of the wood plane to create a raw, tactile transition where the two distinct mediums intersect.
The white oak is finished with a smooth, muted earth-tint to preserve the natural character of the rift-sawn grain, while the steel features a deep, stabilized oxidation that brings an industrial permanence to the final form.
