The Cantilevered Coffee Table is a commanding exploration of structural balance, weight, and negative space. Designed to subvert the traditional solid tabletop layout, its composition features a series of massive timber beams suspended seamlessly over offset architectural legs. The resulting floating effect creates an arresting visual tension, capturing attention as a sculptural centerpiece defined by minimalist intent and geometric clarity.
The upper plane is composed of five massive, block-cut beams of solid premium Douglas fir. Spaced with deliberate precision, the timbers are anchored by a concealed internal steel infrastructure that allows the outer sections to extend into a dramatic, unsupported cantilever. The wood is finished with a hand-applied satin oil that deeply penetrates the dense grain fibers, accentuating the rich amber warmth and tight ring patterns of the fir while leaving a smooth, satin gallery patina.
Supporting this floating timber arrangement are four offset, heavy-walled cylindrical steel legs. The structural cylinders are treated with a hand-applied, stabilized industrial patina to yield a deep, velvety monochromatic finish—providing a monumental, grounded anchor to the fluid geometric forms above.
TIMBER STRUCTURE: Solid premium Douglas fir beams
BASE STRUCTURE: Heavy-walled offset cylindrical steel legs
JOINERY: Concealed high-strength internal structural steel spine
MATERIALS: Solid Douglas fir, structural steel
FINISH: Hand-applied deep-penetrating satin oil; stabilized industrial dark steel patina
DIMENSIONS:15 × 44 × 28 in.
Every Cantilevered Coffee Table is built to order in our Vermont studio. Custom lengths, widths, beam configurations, alternative architectural timber species (such as rift-sawn oak or walnut), and alternative metal leg finishes are available upon request to complement tailored interior trade requirements.
